Contact: I am a self-taught artist, born and raised in upstate New York. I've painted all of my life, starting with the Christmas decorations I plastered to every window of my family home. The winter of 1977 (actually it was SPRING, it just seemed like winter....hence the problem) convinced me that in another life it was never necessary for me to chop through ice to get a key in to a car lock, so I headed south in pursuit of that other life. By May of that year I was living in Key West, Florida. It was in the Keys that I found my identity as an artist. No longer just painting when the spirit moved me, I started seriously working to learn my craft. Since then I've been plastering paintings, instead of Christmas decorations, on walls all over the place! I lived in the Florida Keys and the Miami area until 1986 when I "expatriated" to Puerto Rico. I've been married and divorced and now life finds me on a little mountain top in eastern Puerto Rico, in a studio overlooking the northeastern coast of the island. I've now spent more time in a tropical environment than living where I was raised, which is quite obvious in my work. It's hard to avoid the influence of rich, intense colors and light when one is surrounded by it daily. I find that people often mistakenly think that tropical living is over the edge, in some faraway, elusive paradise. For years friends and family would ask me when I was coming back to the REAL world....back to reality. But ya know, latitude has nothing to do with reality. However, perhaps it's this illusion of "being beyond" the edges of the real world that seeps in to my work....sometimes real, sometimes imagined, sometimes both. |
